HtHoI: Greg Strom

It's that time of the month again: to humanize the humans behind Infinity and the community we enjoy so much! Greg Strom is this week's subject, so get ready to learn some more about the people in the community. For reference, I'm the italicized bits and he's the regular font bits.

-What do you currently do for a living?

I'm a stay at home Dad as well as a driver for Lyft, which is a recent change. My 7 month old son keeps me very busy.

Greg

-Do you have a degree or degrees? What are they in? Do you think they help you with playing Infinity or when interacting with the community?
I do not have any degrees, I never went to school post High School because I never figured out what I wanted to do for a living, so I figured going into massive debt for something I might never use wasn't worth it. I do have a lot of experience in a wide variety of subjects though. I wouldn't call myself a jack of all trades, but maybe a 10 of many?

-If you had one wish, what would you wish for?

Gosh, uh, world peace? End world hunger? Every day is Taco Tuesday?

Good choice Greg, good choice. Taco Tuesday every day would be awesome!

-Where do you live? What store do you usually play at?

I live in St. Paul Minnesota and generally play at the Fantasy Flight Games Event Center (FFGEC) in Roseville or Tower Games down in South Minneapolis. FFGEC is a friggin unicorn of a gaming store (you can ask pretty much anyone that travelled up for Twinfinity) with a full kitchen, beer, wine, coffee, etc and tons of play space. You should definitely check it out if you're in the area.

-What faction/s do you play?
Yu Jing was (and is) my first love. The HI are what pulled me in when I started playing, and they're still one of my favorite things to run today. So as you can probably imagine, I'm ridiculously excited for Invincible Army to hit. I've also delved pretty hard into ISS and thoroughly enjoy the unique playstyle and options that the sectorial offers. JSA doesn't interest me at all really. So it'll probably be a long while before I start down that path.

I also recently picked up Haqqislam with the release of Red Veil. But I wasn't too big on the actual Haq aesthetic so o took my stuff in a very different direction...

Cobra Haqq!

-Can you give us the full load down on how, when, and why you started playing Infinity? I started at the behest of Dexter Schiller out in the Denver area back in N2. He convinced me to give it a go and I've been hooked ever since. Between him and the other guys out there (Nathan Burg and Shane Everly we're frequent opponents and definitely helped me grow as a player), I earned my Infinity chops before moving back home to the Twin Cities and was part of the growth of our wonderful meta here.

-What do you do for the Infinity community? Or, what have you done already? Don’t be humble let us know about everything!

I'm one of three hosts of the Remote Presence podcast along with Sean Poeschl and Joel Vaughn. We were constantly having discussions at the game store after finishing up our games and discussing units, tactics, general theory and stuff and we noticed that we would usually draw a crowd of local players who would listen and sometimes chime in. We figured it would be fun and useful for the community to record those types of discussions to help improve our community as a whole and improve the play of our players. Things have been pretty successful so far, and we just hosted the second largest tournament in the U.S. last month (which was a blast), and we've been constantly impressed with our local crew. Couldn't be happier to play with these guys on the regular.

-What is your biggest Infinity accomplishment? I'm pretty notorious for hitting ridiculous shots with my Kuang Shi using pistols. I've had a lone Kuang Shi wipe out a Sekban Haris at range, double crit a Swiss Guard in the face, blast enemy snipers in ARO, etc. It's gotten to the point where some of the locals will take extra measures to make sure I won't be able to shoot with them in ARO.

...You're a monster.

-What would you like to see in Infinity in the future?

Invincible Army and White Banner sectorials for Yu Jing. A Celestial Guard SWC box (come on guys!). But I think something that would be phenomenal to see is an updated campaign system similar to what was in Paradiso. I really love the idea of your mission objectives changing depending on the outcome of your previous mission. It's something that I'm messing with to try this year at the Renegade Open for the narrative event.

-Do you have any hobbies outside of Infinity? What are they?
I used to be an avid video gamer as well, but as of late I don't generally have the time for it.

Other than that, I do design some terrain for Infinity which can be found from Muse on Minis. I'm currently working on the next "wave" of pieces now that they've launched the line. Oh, and yes, it's called "Strompost Alpha" and it's not a typo. It's what the guys over at the Muse office started calling it and it stuck.

-Is there anything else you’d like the Infinity community to know about you?
I love talking tactics and unit theory. One of my favorite things is finding a new or different use for a model that is generally viewed as subpar or worthless. I also really enjoy getting people familiar with ISS, as it's kind of as it's kind of a weird sectorial and there's a lot to offer that isn't readily apparent. So feel free to reach out either on FB or via the podcast and I'd be happy to discuss or help you out with stuff.

And that's Greg for you! If there's one thing this guy really loves, it's converting, painting, and talking about the Jade Empire. Remember, ISS is always watching....

  1. Thank you for sharing his interview I was waiting for it. I didn't know you would have it in such detail that we never knew about him
